Marian Weston can draw from a wealth of experiences spanning all chapters of expatriate life over several decades and continents - from her childhood as a Third Culture Kid (TCK) in East Africa to overseas postings in The Gulf, Jordan and Sri Lanka with her own young family.

Repatriation and several challenging years as a 'stay-at-home partner' back in the UK with the children followed life overseas , whilst her husband continued working on short term assignments abroad. The dual challenge of repatriation and the new role of 'stay-at-home partner' was a steep learning curve and, combined with the lack of available resources, it motivated Marian to research and write her first book 'Alone at Home' . Her aim in writing this book was to explore the impacts of short term assignments on the family, as well as creating something tangible, a practical tool and support for those experiencing this particular lifestyle.

Current research indicates a rapid increase in the use and popularity of short-term assignments by employers. Organisations are, however, becoming aware of the need for improved support, resources and policies for short-term assigment staff. Marian's experience mean that she is well qualified in both understanding the needs of expatriates and their families and to make recommendations for improved family-friendly policies.

Alone at home is Marian's first book, and is now available through the website. She already has extensive experience writing for expatriate magazines, newspapers and specialist websites. Interviewed by Jenni Murray on Radio 4 and the Wall St Journal, she also presents on expatriate issues at Farnham Castle Training Centre, England. Marian will be speaking on this subject at the Families in Global Transition Conference
( www.figt.org ) to be held in Houston at the end of March.
